A Christmas Treasury

by Donna Huber

I love Christmas books. My sister gave me Norman Rockwell's Christmas Book many years ago, and it's one of my favorite books, A few weeks ago I discovered A Christmas Treasury at Barnes & Noble and just couldn't pass it up.

I think there is only one story that is the same between the two books - O. Henry's Gift of Magi. A Christmas Treasury includes stories from Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol), Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, L. M. Montogomery, and more. Also, there are poems such as the famous A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the Night Before Christmas) by Clement Clarke Moore.

There are a number of stories, even from the more famous authors, that I didn't know about. Like, A Country Christmas by Louisa May Alcott. Here's how it begins...

Dear Emily,
I have a brilliant idea, and at once hasten to share it with you. Three weeks ago I came up here to the wilds of Vermont to visit my old aunt, also to get a little quiet and distance in which to survey certain new prospects which have opened before me and to decide whether I will marry a millionaire and become a queen of society, or remain "the charming Miss Vaughan" and wait till the conquering hero comes.

Have you read this short story?

The book also includes wonderful artwork. A Christmas Carol includes several illustrations as do the other stories.

It is a beautiful book; one I will treasure for years to come.
