Kills Well with Others by Deanna Raybourn ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

After more than a year of laying low, Billie, Helen, Mary Alice, and Natalie are called back into action. They have enjoyed their time off, but the lack of excitement is starting to chafe: a professional killer can only take so many watercolor classes and yoga sessions without itching to strangle someone...literally. When they receive a summons from the head of the elite assassin organization known as the Museum, they are ready to tackle the greatest challenge of their careers.

Kills Well with Others
is the second book in the Killers of a Certain Age series. While I did read the first book (same title as the series) a couple of years ago, I don't think it is necessary to have read it to enjoy this book. I don't really remember much about the first book, actually, except that it was about women in their 60s who are professional assassins.

The first book was billed as The Golden Girls meets James Bond. And that is still an apt description.

There isn't a lot of character development or growth. They are pretty two-dimensional, but they are fun even if a bit stereotypical. The plot is a bit far-fetched as well. What I really like about the book is all the explanations about their various tactics. I'm an old-school spy thriller fan (like Cold War-era spy novels), and all the spy craft that was employed was always so much fun to read. I enjoy all of that in this book. At times, I was reminded of Mission Impossible (which also had stereotypical characters and far-fetched plots, but I enjoyed it nonetheless).

There is a lot going on in this book, and I occasionally got lost as the story moved back and forth between present action and flashback. It also has a quick pace as they try to protect potential targets and discover the mole behind everything.

If you enjoy older characters and want a fun read, then pick up this book.
