Kitty St. Clair's Last Dance by Kate Robb ~ a Review

by MK French

Retiree Kitty St. Clair passes away and leaves Jules a dilapidated dance hall, which draws in charming developer Reeve. Selling the dance hall and turning it into luxury condos would allow Jules to afford medical school, but it would drive up local real estate prices and make it harder for locals to live there. On top of that, Reeve ghosted Jules two summers ago. He says he wants a second chance, but Jules can't trust him. She wishes she could ask Kitty for advice the way she used to, and falls asleep reading Kitty's diary. It transports her fifty years into the past, into the dance hall's heyday. Kitty’s past seems to parallel Jules' concerns, and may help her determine her future.

Jules is in a tough spot thanks to her mother's poor choices and using her identity to take out loans and open credit cards. She works hard and is still trying to get into medical school. Kitty had been one of her favorite residents at the nursing home, but it's still a shock to inherit the dance hall. Reeve was looking for the new owner to buy it, and wants to reconnect with Jules. He doesn't even find out that she's the owner until almost halfway through the book. He clearly has interest in her from the start, which is reciprocated even though she hates the idea of what he does.

I like the idea of seeing Kitty's life in dreams, and that she had her own struggles to find the best path forward. Jules is also wondering if she should try leaving for the big city chasing a dream or stay in the small town for a sure thing. As the novel progresses, Jules and Reeve meet and grow closer, and Jules has dreams showing her the life Kitty's led, and the regrets from what she had given up. Jules makes her own decision to get her happily ever after. It's a sweet and heartfelt story, perfect for reading with tea and a cozy sweater.

Born and raised in New York City, M.K. French started writing stories when very young, dreaming of different worlds and places to visit. She always had an interest in folklore, fairy tales, and the macabre, which has definitely influenced her work. She currently lives in the Midwest with her husband, three young children, and a golden retriever.
