You know you have too many books in your TBR when you miss the new book in a favorite series. We Three Queens is book 18 in Rhys Bowen's Her Royal Spyness series. I discovered this series during the pandemic when I read On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service. Because there was more time then, I was able to catch up with the rest of the books and have now read everything except for 2 novellas. I didn't read the series in order, so if you are just starting it now, don't worry about jumping in with this book.
Georgiana is settling into domestic life. She's navigating life with an infant, especially since she is bucking social norms by not getting a nanny or wet nurse. When Darcy tells her that a certain woman will be staying with them at the King's request, she accepts it as her duty to family and country. But then Fig writes that she and Binky will be coming to stay while they look at schools in the area for their son. Then, to top it all off, she receives a telegram from Sir Hubert...he's coming home and bringing people. These people turn out to be a Hollywood film crew who wants to shoot scenes on the grounds. Poor Georgie will have her hands full, but this is a cozy mystery, so you know that uninvited guests are the least of her problems.
I have to say that the mystery part of the novel is a very small part of the book. I felt like this was more of a slice-of-life type novel. With the film crew there, I was reminded a little of Downton Abbey. While it was nice seeing normal life now that she and Darcy are parents, I found myself missing the times when Georgiana would find herself in impossible situations (remember when she tried to get a job cleaning houses) and Darcy would help her out.
There was more talk about what is going on in Germany. Georgiana's mother is still keen on staying in Germany with Max so there are worries there and plenty of plot opportunities in future books for more dangerous actions.
If you are following this series and have fallen behind like me, then now is the time to catch up, as book 19 comes out on November 18.
