Books I Meant to Read This Month

by Donna Huber

Every month I usually leave a book or two from the list I planned for the month in the TBR pile. This month has been a horrible reading month. I had real trouble focusing on books the first week or so of the month as I grieved the death of my father. I only finished 7 books (so far): 1 was a book I have been reading all summer for work, and 4 were audiobooks. So I have a bunch of books languishing in my TBR pile that hit shelves this month, and I wanted to give a little shout-out to them.

Review Round Up: 5 Books from my review pile backlog

by Donna Huber

I had two wonderful weeks off work and was able to read or listen to 11 books. A few of them were short Christmas stories that I listened to while wrapping presents or riding in the car. Most though were books from my review pile. I've already published some of those reviews, today I have the last of the books I read in 2024.

2 Fun Mysteries to Entertain You

by Donna Huber

This time of year I enjoy quick, fun reads but I sometimes overdo it on Christmas novels (I gobble them up like sugar cookies). If you are in need of a palate cleanser but still want something fun to read, then you definitely need to pick up these mysteries. One is from a series I eagerly anticipate the new book each year and the other is the start of a new series.

Where the Sky Begins by Rhys Bowen ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

I always look forward to Rhys Bowen's summer historical novel. They are more of the romantic story of WWII story, but I wouldn't call them romances. Where the Sky Begins is a women's fiction novel set on the homefront in England.

2 Mysteries Perfect for Weekend Reading

by Donna Huber

Banner with the covers of Wild Irish Rose and The Party at No 12. The word Mysteries is across the bottom.

Old Man Winter is supposed to make a reappearance this weekend so it will be a great time to curl up with a good book, cozy blanket, and a hot beverage. Two recently published mysteries would be perfect for a weekend of binge reading. If you are looking for the edginess of a domestic thriller, then pick up the first recommendation and if you prefer something lighter with great characters, then the second on has your name on it.

God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen by Rhys Bowen ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

I always look forward to a new book in Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series and this year's offering is a Christmas story. This is Lady Georgiana and Darcy's first Christmas as a married couple. As they have a great country estate (thanks to one of Georgie's mother's ex-husbands), Georgie is excited to host a house party for the holidays.

The Venice Sketchbook by Rhys Bowen ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

I first discovered Rhys Bowen when I picked up a book in her cozy mystery series. I loved it so much I looked to see what else she had written and discovered she also wrote standalone, dual timeline historical fiction, mostly to do with WWII. You know I'm a big WWII fan so I was all over those books. I really loved the last one so I was anxious to see what she would come out with this year with The Venice Sketchbook.

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight ~ an Anthology Review

by Donna Huber

I'm not a huge fan of short fiction, but after I read (and loved) a collection of domestic thriller short stories I decided it was just the genres that I had read previously. So this anthology had two things that attracted me: 1. the short stories are in the suspense genre and 2. Rhys Bowen contributed a story.

The Last Mrs. Summers by Rhys Bowen ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

I've been curious as to how the Royal Spyness series would continue now that the main characters have married. Would there be something missing now that there wasn't the tug-of-war of will they/won't they get together? Or would there be more fun as the two solve crime together?

Above the Bay of Angels by Rhys Bowen ~ a Review

by Donna Huber

London, September 1896
If Helen Barton hadn't stepped out in front of an omnibus, I might still be sweeping floors and lighting fires at an ostentatious house in St John's Wood. But for once I had followed my father's advice. (p.1)

Since discovering Rhys Bowen's cozy mystery series Her Royal Spyness, I've been trying to read all her other books. Last winter, I read my first stand-alone novel by her, The Tuscan Child (read my review) and loved it. So when I saw The Victory Garden on Netgalley, I knew I had to read.

What Donna Read in May #MondayBlogs

by Donna Huber

The return of warm weather means that my reading time is now being usurped by yard work. While I was 6 books ahead of schedule on my reading challenge, I'm not only 4 books ahead. That is still very good for me. I only read 7 books this month, though I guess with almost a week left in the month I might get another book in.
