Growing up, I loved reading dark, realistic fiction. They were mostly about the main character battling their own demons - realizing they were kidnapped, struggling with suicidal thoughts or addiction. The only mysteries I really remember reading were The Bobbsey Twins. Picking up In Case I Go Missing by R.N. Swan felt like stepping into a gritty, dark, realistic thriller that bridges the gap between my favorite childhood themes and modern suspense. 

A Gritty Mystery Built on External Danger

When Sarah is discovered missing, her best friends, Fenny and Sam, are left to follow the clues she left behind.  Unlike the young adult novels of my youth that focused strictly on internal turmoil, the plot here dives headfirst into external dangers and threats. There are strong psychological aspects to the story, like Feeny and Sam coming to terms with Sarah's death and Feeny's alcoholic mother. However, these elements feel naturally woven in to flesh out the characters and fuel their growth rather than dragging down the momentum of the plot.

Meet Feeny: A Heroine Forged in Resilience

Feeny reminded me of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games trilogy. Because her mother is an alcoholic and her father left them, she has had to grow up fast. Her fierce independence never feels forced or fake; it is presented as a realistic survival mechanism born from years of taking care of herself.

Does This YA Thriller Work for Adult Readers?

Up until the end, I didn't feel like this book was restricted to a young adult audience. While passing mentions of school and parents remind you that the characters are teens, the writing avoids leaning too heavily into modern teen slang ("Gen Alpha"), making it genuinely accessible and enjoyable for adult readers as well.

I did say "until the end," because it leaned a little too high-school-centric, which didn't fit the tone of the rest of the book. 

Final Thought

Flawlessly paced, well-written, and anchored by deeply realistic characters, In Case I Go Missing is a compelling read for fans of dark fiction and suspense.
