A Big Surprise for Valentine’s Day by Jackie Lau ~ a Review

by MK French

Amber Wong works hard at her dream job at the Stratford Festival and has generally sworn off dating after a number of bad boyfriends. Dr. Sebastian Lam, the son of her parents’ close friends, has moved back to Ontario. They have a mutual attraction now and agree to no-strings-attached sex. Their families know they're spending time together, but what happens if they actually develop feelings?

February 2020; ebook (116 pages); romance
It's not necessary to have read the other Wong family novels before this one, because anything you need to know for this story is stated outright. Amber is Zach's little sister, who is of age with Sebastian. They have their "meet cute" in chapter one by literally bumping into each other in the family planning aisle of the pharmacy and flirt over condom size. Not exactly what you would expect for a romance novel, but neither was exactly planning on romance. They fully intend on being each others' booty calls, no matter how awkward it is to set up initially, but this is a romance novel. Of course, they'd catch feels.

The Wong family is just as hilarious as ever, and Ah Ma saying inappropriate things while intoxicated is fun to read about. Of course, Amber would be embarrassed by it, though it's also just as clear that her family loves her very much and only wants the best for her. The Lam family is the same about Sebastian, of course, but he also is able to set limits with their interference and delineate what he wants in his life. Of course, he wants Amber in it, and they go about their daily lives thinking of things they want to talk to each other about or experiences they want to share. They've built a relationship without even realizing it, and for them, it works. Instead of worrying about making things work, they click. It's the best kind of relationship, really, and a fun rom-com to read about.
