Captian Marvel Liberation Run
February 2019; Titan Books; 978-1789091656
ebook, print (288 pages); science fiction
This is a novel within the Marvel Universe, much as Margaret Stohl's Black Widow novels are. The enslavement of Inhumans is a plot hook present in various comics and even season 5 of the "Agents of SHIELD" television show within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the current Captain Marvel film adding to the MCU, this is a great novel to take a look at what Carol would likely be up to in the greater galaxy, and why she couldn't participate in some of the antics seen thus far. Like Margaret Stohl's books, this one isn't exactly MCU-compatible.

In keeping with various iterations of Carol seen throughout the years, our first introduction to her is in a restaurant with her friend, stopping to intervene in a dudebro trying to force his way past the soft "no" a woman at the bar is giving him. Carol is strong-willed and brash, but her heart is in the right place to save those that don't have the power to save themselves. She knows this about herself too, and describes the rescue trip as "less sobbing, more punching," which is pretty much an accurate summary of her character. When she discovers that Rhi and her people were viciously decimated and enslaved on the planet Damaria in a fashion described as "The Handmaid's Tale" taken to another level by Scott Lang. His Ant-Man is recruited to help Carol and Mantis on the mission to save the Inhumans of Demaria,

The story moves quickly and sucks you right in. Of course, the Council on Demaria is full of atrocities of all kinds, particularly misogynistic ones, and suppressed their own natural history to keep power for themselves. Our heroes have plans foiled as they move in, and the journey to the end is an exciting one to the very end.
