by Susan Roberts

There are a lot of books about growing up but it seems that most of them about teenage girls.  These two books are both about teenage boys.  One book takes place in the South in the late 50s and the other takes place current day and is about the drug epidemic in this country.

The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

On Block Island this summer you'll find
-Ocean water the color of the Caribbean
-365 ponds (one for each day of the year)
-Ice cream, sunscreen, bikes with wicker baskets

AND

-One famous writer hiding from a big mistake
-One bakery owner with off-island competition
-One stay-at-home mom with a secret job

Now that summer is here I find myself enjoying light beach reads. If it's about the beach, I want to give it a try. The Islanders fit my summer reading requirements perfectly. There are three main interesting characters, some mystery, some romance and lots of sand and water! Perfect!

Good Buddy by Dori Ann Dupré ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

Jonathan “Buddy” Cordova is a small-time criminal defense lawyer living paycheck to paycheck and practicing law out of his house in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He likes to think of himself as a modern-day Atticus Finch, the kind of attorney who represents the poor, the indigent, the “probably guilty,” the kinds of clients who usually end up in jail. Shy, painfully awkward around pretty women, and carrying his own dark secret, Buddy falls for the daily jogger - Julie Saint, a part-time Kindergarten teacher and Army widow with a little girl named Molly.

The Key to Happily Ever After by Tif Marcelo ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

I love reading books about sisters. As the oldest of three sisters, I can tell you that this book is very true to real life - three sisters having frequent disagreements but always having each other's backs when life gets tough.  These three sisters are struggling to keep the family wedding planning business successful. Their parents had started the business and when they retired, they turned the business over to their daughters - Mari, Jane, and Pearl. This is a sweet romantic comedy about the power of sisterhood.

The Rain Watcher by @TatianaDeRosnay ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

I will start with the tree. Because everything begins, and ends, with the tree. The tree is the tallest one. It was planted way before the others. I’m not sure how old it is, exactly. Perhaps three or four hundred years old. It is ancient and powerful. It has weathered terrible storms, braced against unbridled winds. It is not afraid.

The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain ~ a Review

by Susan Roberts

To my Daughter,
You don't know me yet.  You don't know how long I've wanted you and longed for you.  You may never know me.  I don't know if I can find my way back to you.  And if I do, I might be nothing but a stranger to you.  But there's one thing that will never change.  I will always be,
Your Mother

6 Books for Fans of Women's Fiction

by Susan Roberts

Women's fiction is an umbrella term for women-centered books that focus on women's life experience that are marketed to female readers and includes many mainstream novels. The Romance Writers of America organization defines women's fiction as, "a commercial novel about a woman on the brink of life change and personal growth. Her journey details emotional reflection and action that transforms her and her relationships with others, and includes a hopeful/upbeat ending with regard to her romantic relationship"

At the Women's Fiction Writers Association women’s fiction is described as a story where the plot is driven by the main character’s emotional journey. Women’s Fiction includes layered stories about one or several characters, often multi-generational that tackles an adult character’s struggle with world issues resulting in emotional growth. It may include elements of mystery, fantasy, romance or other subgenres, but is not driven by these elements. The writing is high quality and accessible.

Mourning Dove by Claire Fullerton ~ A Review

by Susan Roberts

The Deep South in the 70s with its unwritten rules and slow-moving life is beautifully written about in MOURNING DOVE. The story is told in that languid, slow and relaxed pace that life in the upper echelons of Memphis society occupied during this time.

The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah ~ A Review

by Susan Roberts

The Lost Vintage is the first book that I've read by Ann Mah and it definitely won't be the last. This was a fantastic well-written novel that takes place in France with a dual time line of present day and the 1940s during WWII. It had mystery, romance and took place in France - what can be better than that?

The Moment Before by Jason Makansi ~ A Review #MondayBlogs

by Susan Roberts

The Moment Before is as much of a family drama as it is about politics and the prejudice against other cultures in America.  There are numerous plotlines and it's not a book that you can skim through because you need to be paying attention as the story jumps between characters and plots.  Overall, I found it very interesting and thought-provoking.

Good Neighbors by Joanne Serling ~ A Review

by Susan Roberts

Good Neighbors is a novel about four families of neighbors in an upscale suburb. They all become friends due to their proximity to each other and probably wouldn't be friends for any other reason because they are all so different. This is a mainly a story of the women in this exclusive clique - the husbands are definitely part of the background and don't play much of a role in the neighborhood dramas and dynamics.
