Millicent Marie is back! Karen Pokras Toz has brought back her middle school, digital diary keeping, advice giving title character in Millicent Marie: Just My Opinion.

Just My Opinion picks up shortly after the end of Millicent Marie Is Not My Name, but can be read as a stand alone. There are a few references to the past BIG event of the first book, but it really has no bearing on the plot of this new book.

Millie has been asked to serve as an advice columnist for her elementary school's paper. She's excited about the upcoming school play and her first sleepover birthday party. For the most part the kids seemed to have learned their lesson after what happened in the first book, except for maybe Doogle, Millie's kid brother. But then snooping is just par of the course for younger siblings. Everything is looking great for the end of her 6th grade year. That is until the odd firing of everyone's favorite principle. Enters new principle Dr. Feather Foster and everyone's worst nightmare. She would give Delores Umbridge a run for her money (I happened to be reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheniox at the same time).

Millie and her friends uncover a sinister plan and concoct a plan of their own to get rid of Dr. Feather Foster. What could go wrong when a bunch of 6th graders, a 4th grader, and a genius kindergarten team up?

Karen Pokras Toz has once again crafted an excellent story that teaches valuable life lessons in a fun and relatable manner.

Review: Chasing Invisible by Karen Pokras Toz (@KarenToz)

Chasing Invisible is Karen Pokras Toz's first foray into adult fiction. You may recognize the author's name as she is the award winning children's author of the Nate Rocks series. I'm a bit behind though on Karen's writing as she now has a romance series, Whispered Wishes, under the name of Karen Pokras. But let's get back to Chasing Invisible.

I love Karen's writing style. I would probably read a cereal box, and enjoy it, if she wrote it. It seems simple and straight forward, but then you begin to peel back the layers and discover so much more to her story. I actually wish I was discussing Chasing Invisible instead of reviewing it. I have a number of questions and speculations I wish to voice, but to do so would be too spoilerish for a review. So instead I must encourage you to pick up the book and read it. Then we can discuss it on another forum... perhaps on Twitter or Facebook.

This week one of the photo prompts was current read, so I snapped a shot of Chasing Invisible. So here's a little teaser for you:

Introverted bookworm Julia meets nice guy lead singer Chase in college. At first, she wants nothing to do with him, but his relentless pursuit (and encouragement from her friend Robyn) finally wears her down and she agrees to a date. Chase is smitten and writes a song for her. Julia falls head over heels for Chase and loves the idea of a song of her very own. Unbeknownst to the happy couple, a friend send the song to a producer. And the crazy fame-filled life ensues.

That is an oversimplification of the plot, yet that is basically how I saw the story. Until I got to the end. A HUGE shock. I knew from the rumbles when Chasing Invisible came out that Karen took a risk with the ending. And when I first read it I was totally what the heck, thinking that it was completely out of character, but then I spent the next six hours not able to stop thinking about the entire story and started to see that maybe it wasn't so out of character. Unfortunately, for me, I must leave it there as this a review and I would hate to ruin the story for you.

I would highly recommend Chasing Invisible for book clubs. Karen helpfully includes a discussion guide at the end, but even without it I'm sure a reader would come up with a number of questions on their own. There is so much that could be discussed.

Next, we;ll head up to the crown where you'll have the most spectacular views of the city. While we're waiting, how about a little history? Let's see... so back in the 1880s, Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design--"
"This is boring," Sam whispers, as we wait in the long line to get through security. (pg 56 on my Nook)

The Review

I have to agree with Sam, that excerpt is quite boring. Particularly given that the rest of the book is full of adventure and fun. I guess that's how it goes when you do the Friday 56 :)

On a more serious note, if you have a 3rd through 5th grader then you will want to get this series. My niece reviewed the first two books in the series and according to her the only reason she couldn't give it 5 stars was because the main character is a boy. In Nate Rocks the City, we finally get the long awaited class trip to New York City. In addition to the normal sites (and food!), Nate has to save the city not once but twice - in his imagination at least. If you haven't met Nate Rocks yet, let me introduce you to the alter ego of Nathan Rockledge. Give Nathan a piece of paper and a pencil and he is off on his next adventure as the famous Nate Rocks. In this installment Nate battles robotic pigeons and alien invaders. Plus he must rescue the class tickets to the Phillies game from criminals playing poker. I loved the story even besides Nathan's wild imagination. It reminded me a lot of the class trip I took to New York City.

In my county, and I'm sure in school districts across the country, children will be heading into their last day of classes today. They will be home for the next two weeks. What is a parent to do? Consider picking up Nate Rocks the City to keep them entertained.

Character Interview with Nathan from Nate Rocks the City by @KarenToz

Welcome Nathan! So I see you finally had a chance to visit New York City! How was it?

It totally rocked, of course! First of all, I got to go with my two best friends, Tommy and Sam, which was awesome – yeah that know-it-all Lisa Crane came along, not to mention my annoying older sister Abby, and my own mom volunteered as class chaperone. UGH.  But you know what? In the end, none of that even mattered, because I had such a GREAT time!

I’m so glad. There’s a lot to see in New York. What were some of the places you went to?

Oh my gosh – there was so much to see! We were only there four days, but Mrs. Cogin – she’s our teacher – she managed to squeeze in a lot of stuff. Let’s see. We went to the zoo in Central Park where we saw the ninja birds, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island where I learned that Lisa Crane is NOT related to Ichabod Crane like she always likes to tell everyone, the Metropolitan Museum of Art which was WAY cool, Times Square – where everything is super-sized, and my personal favorite – Yankee Stadium.

Wow! You did see a lot of stuff. So I have to ask – did you ride the subway?

Yeah. It was crowded and stinky. Not a highlight of the trip.

So other than the things mentions – were there any other highlights of the trip?

 Oh yeah – the FOOD was amazing! I’m not even joking! I seriously could have skipped the sightseeing and just eaten 24/7. Of course, you have to live in my house back home and eat my mom’s cooking everyday to understand why. It’s not good (and by not good, I mean it’s downright awful) - - you’re not going to print that part are you?

Review: Nate Rocks the School by @KarenToz

I finally read my first Nate Rocks book. My niece read the first two and said they were great, even though they were about a boy. If you have kids stuck home because of the winter weather, you should definitely pick up this series. I'm sure it would entertain for hours.

Geared for kids in the 2nd to 5th grade, it is still fun for adults. So if you are a parent who either reads to their kids or reads what their kids are reading, then you will enjoy Nate Rocks the School just as much as your kids. Oh, and you don't have to read Nate Rocks the World and Nate Rocks the Boat to know what's going on in Nate Rocks the School. There is enough background on who is who to catch you up to speed pretty quickly.

In this installment, Nathan Rockledge and his fifth grade class are raising funds for the class trip to New York City. They are having a to work a little harder than classes in the past as the Halloween event does not raise as much money as usual. This may or not be a result of Mrs. Rockledge's culinary skills. It is not surprising that Karen Pokras Toz is an award winning children's author. Her writing is excellent. Review: Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas

Karen Pokras Toz has been featured on my blog several times and my niece has reviewed her books, Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas is my first introduction to Karen's writing. I can see why she is an award winning children's author.

Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas would be enjoyed by children in grades 4th through 6th. I could very well see this book being a favorite of mine when I was that age.

Georgie's family has moved to be closer to her grandmother who lives in a nursing home. Unfortunately, the move has meant not only leaving her best friend, but having to give up ballet lessons. I remember when we moved to Georgia and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to continue with gymnastics.

Georgie spends her extra time visiting her grandmother and baking pies. Her grandmother gets a new roommate who happened to have danced with a world renown ballet company in Russia. Listening to her stories about dancing with Georgie's idol, has made Georgie even more determined to find a way to pay for her ballet lessons. Hilarity ensues with her money making schemes. As an adult, I could so see the outcome coming, but I can still remember my own early entrepreneurial attempts and I think Karen did a great job of capturing the gung ho spirit of determined pre-teens.

A great book for kids who are struggling with changes in their own lives and learning about perseverance.

Karen Pokras Toz: Street Teams

Today I want to talk about street teams, otherwise known as promo teams. Street teams are a great way to get the word out about your books and events to a fresh new audience and should be a part of every author’s marketing plan. Here are my tips on street teams:

Set up a separate Facebook group page just for your team.

I recruited the initial members of my street team by posting about it on my Facebook author page. That way, you know that the people who respond are people who follow you regularly and are familiar with your books. I directed everyone to a separate group page where the team now hangs out to discuss promos.


Love your street team, and they will love you back.

Your street team is your promotional team. As such, they should be paid. After all, if you went out and hired a PR firm, they wouldn’t spread the word about your work out of the kindness of their hearts (although I’d be ever so grateful if they did!) In a perfect world, I’d be able to pay my street team in cash. But since I can’t, I pay them in the next best thing: SWAG. It’s true – street team members love swag!  I like to offer monthly prizes and often will throw in other prizes during the month just because... I use random.org and rafflecopter to keep it fair. I like to use prizes that are exclusive to my team, or that I offer to my team first before anyone else sees them.

Showing off the prizes that you’re giving away to street team members on your author page is also a great way to lure more members into your team. 

Keep it simple.

The first team I started was a disaster! I had this whole elaborate point system that depended on who posted what where. The members were like WHAT? I was like WHAT? It never got past day one. This time around, I did things completely different. When I ask my street team to share, I will have the post or tweet already written. I pin it to the top of the group page where it stays for a few days. They are free to reword if they wish, or they can simply copy & paste it to Facebook, G+, Twitter, etc. Once they share it, they simple let me know in the comments and they are entered into the giveaway.

Don’t overkill.

My team’s followers will get bored if they see the same posts everyday, so unless I have a tour going on, I try to limit posts for the team to once maybe twice a week. Also, I always let my team members know when I hear of other teams looking for members. What? Why would I do that? For starters, I like helping other authors, but also I'm helping my team members have variety in their posts so that their readers won’t get bored and will hopefully stay more engaged.


Ask their opinion.

What types of prizes do they want? What types of posts do they like? A while ago I asked about Twitter and found out about this site called Click to Tweet. It made everything so easy to share. I never would have known about it otherwise.


Have fun & get to know your team!

Remember they are with you because they both like you as a person and enjoy your work.
